We want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and take a moment to reflect the positive and sad experiences we endured these last 12 months. We lost 4 members who moved out of the area and the Lord called the fifth one. We welcomed Bernie and Jim who joined our club. Several members were on hand to celebrate Sheila and Michelle’s acquisition of a new RV before their trip to Oregon.

The Lavender Hearts Committee collected a van load of canned goods for the Salt Mines and delivered over 35 bags of clothing to Peace for Families of Auburn. They also made a donation of $1,000.00 to support the Placer PFLAG 2013 Gay Straight Alliance Club Scholarship Program. A big thanks goes to Sharon and her group who worked very hard all year to think of ways to collect funds and donations for these well deserved organizations.

As usual, a good time was had by 81-members and guests at our Christmas Dinner Dance held at Turkey Creek Golf Course. Our DJ “Jammin’ Jo” had everyone out on the dance floor. Of course the day after, we were all reaching for the “bengay and heating pads”. Again thanks to Donna & Janine who organized this event. Our last event of the year was the “Winter Wonderland Brunch” at Jacquie and Nancy’s house. Twenty- one members and guests enjoyed themselves and the food was fantastic.

Don’t forget that the PFLAG of Greater Placer County holds its meetings on the second Monday of the month at 7 PM in Conference Room A at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital, 11815 Education Street, Auburn, Ca.

Well, the New Year began on a sad note with the passing of Judy, a very special person and Lavender Friends member. Judy was instrumental in Lavender Friends becoming a sanctioned club here in SCLH. She loved the Lavender Friends club and was a very active member, especially in our Lavender Hearts group. She will be sincerely missed by all of us.

On another note, Jan and Dorothy advised that the Happy Hour Book Club is starting to grow. Reviewing and snacking on the home- made goodies makes everyone happy at their monthly meetings. Marsha is teaching a couple of us the card game, “Hand and Foot”. Once the four of us get better at it, we will be able to teach other members who are interested. It’s a fun card game to play. Want to thank Gina and Terry, our new Social Activities Committee Chairs, for organizing all our Breakfast, Lunch, Coffee and Potluck events for the year. They worked very hard in setting up the dates and places of our events.   Our next functions will be our bimonthly coffee and potluck. Both events should be well attended.

Our first potluck of the year was a great success with 30 members in attendance. Besides the good food and conversation, Gina gave us a demonstration on AED use and heart information. Dorothy and Jan hosted the first coffee and two possible new members were in attendance. We had 13 members at Claudia’s house for game night. We played Pictionary and of course those in attendance can’t draw. It was very funny and a very good time was had. We are looking forward to the next game night at John’s house. Again Terry reserved a table for the bingo games at OC.

Robyn will participate again with PFLAG Gay Straight Alliance Scholarship Committee. Their first meeting will be to review and finalize the scholarship information and applications forms. The second meeting will evaluate applications received, and make final selections of scholarship recipients. They will make a few follow-up telephone calls to persons listed as references on the students’ scholarship applications.

The Group Expo was another great success, and I want to thank everyone who stopped by our table. At these expo’s you are never sure how it will turn out, but everyone seemed to have a good time. The Lincoln Rotary Foundation will be having their 2nd Lincoln Wine & Art Festival on Saturday, April 27th at Beerman Plaza. Of course I and several other SCLH artists will be there to sell our crafts.

Patti hosted a potluck at her house the other day. As usual everyone brought a dish to share. We have a lot of folk who can cook! The surprise dishes are always wonderful. Again we had a large turnout for breakfast at Awful Annies the other day. The Happy Hour Book Club meets the second Wednesday of the month. New members are always welcome. Currently they are reading Westley the Owl by Stacy O’Brien. We really enjoyed Sonia Sotomayor’s memoir My Beloved World and The Day the World Came to Town 9/11, by Jim Defede. This has led to card gatherings for Hand and Foot.

At our potluck we had Marie who is a Placer County Master Gardener, and she lead a discussion on how to turn your kitchen waste into free fertilizer for your yard or indoor plants. The discussion was interesting and fun as she demonstrated with her own garbage. Carol is planning another spring picnic in May or June. It will be an afternoon barbecue at Lake Natoma and everyone can bring their dogs, kayaks, bikes and games or just sit and talk. Last years picnic was a big success. More details to follow. Couple of us got together at Gina & Terry’s house the other night to play Tripoley. It was a fun night.

For the second year, the Lavender Friends Club is able to provide financial support to college bound high school students who are members of their school’s Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) Club and applied for a scholarship through the Placer PFLAG organization. Our Lavender Hearts Committee raised $2000 in 2012, (double what was raised in 2011, through the Club’s Christmas Cookie Exchange, Lavender Hearts Cafe Italiano: A Progressive Dinner, Opportunity to Make a Difference Potluck & Auction and individual donors. The Club was involved in the Scholarship Selection Committee by sending Robyn and Sharon as representatives. The winning candidates will receive their scholarship checks shortly.

Want to thank Patti for hosting another brunch at her house the other day. Looking forward to our next breakfast gathering at Awful Annie’s and the picnic at Lake Natoma.

Though our club was formed several years ago by primarily gay residents to provide a social venue for non heterosexuals in our community, we would like those who live here to know that we have evolved over time in several ways. In addition to social gatherings, we support members with health or other needs, raise funds to support local charitable groups, and work with PFLAG, a gay, straight alliance. We are sharing this information because we want all residents to know we are a philanthropic and activist, as well a social, club. We have straight as well as gay members and welcome anyone interested in learning more about us to contact us for further information, and, perhaps, to join us in an activity to learn if our club might be for you.

Twelve members had a fun time at Claudia’s house for Game Night, and everyone brought a small dish to share. Looking forward to our next breakfast gathering at Awful Annie’s and the picnic at Lake Natoma.

All Northern California PFLAG organizations marched in the SF Gay Pride parade this year. They had over 250 representatives from Fresno to Colfax. A couple of LF members marched with The Placer County PFLAG group and they received a lot of cheers from the attendees. They had so much fun, that they marched with PFLAG in the July 4th Roseville parade. We meet the senior from Del Oro high school who received this year GSA scholarship. He was admitted to UCLA.

We had another big turnout at Claudia’s house for Game Night and are looking forward to our next pot luck at Robyn and Sam’s and our upcoming picnic at Lake Natoma.

When we marched in the Roseville parade, we heard a couple of comments “what is PFLAG”. Well, it’s stands for Parents, Family/Friends of Lesbians and Gays. We are a support group for the LGBT community. To have a successful General Business Meeting, we decided to combine it with our Hawaiian potluck. Of course we had a very large turnout. Our thanks go out to Sheila, Michelle and Remy who hosted the event. We are looking forward to our picnic event at Lake Natoma at the end of the month that Carol will be hosting. This will be another fun event.

Since the courts struck down Prop 8 and DOMA, we had two couples married. One of the couples after 9 years was Jacquie and Nancy. We are very happy for them.

Sixteen members attended our annual picnic at Lake Natoma the other day. Several members and their dogs enjoyed walking around the lake. Others stayed at the picnic area and played card games or just relaxed. Of course everyone brought a dish to share.

We are looking forward to our October potluck as our guest speaker will be Pam Jones (Lesbian Lawyer) who specializes in estate planning, probate and trusts. She will speak on the difference between couples that are Registered Domestic Partners vs. Married couples due to the fall of DOMA and Prop 8 as we now have the 1131 federal marital rights that heterosexual couples have.

Nineteen members attended an unscheduled game night at Claudia’s house the other night. She had to set up two tables, and most of the folks haven’t played Uno in 20 some years. It was a hoot! As you know it doesn’t take long to remember how to give the person next to you an extra card. What a cut throat game this can be. Everyone had a lot of fun.

45 members and guest attended our potluck the other evening. Our guest speaker, Pam Jones, was very knowledgeable and we now understand the difference between Registered Domestic Partners vs. Married couples. Donna and Janine provided the main course and everyone else brought a side dish to share.

Our 6th annual Christmas Dinner & Dance at Turkey Creek Golf Club is coming up, and as usual, we have 100 members and guests enjoying the food, disco dancing to our DJ, Jammin Jo selection, or to special requests. We will also be donating Turkey dinners to Peace for Families and our canned goods to the Salt Mine of Lincoln.

If you are interested, and in need, the PFLAG of Greater Placer County holds its meeting on the second Monday of the month at 7 pm in Conference room A at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital, 11815 Education Street, Auburn, Ca.

Now that this year is coming to an end, we want to thank everyone who hosted an event this year. Our last two events for this year will be Jacquie and Nancy’s Christmas Brunch and our 6th annual Christmas Dinner & Dance at Turkey Creek Golf Club.

After three years as President of Lavender Friends Club, Phil decided to step down and Claudia will be our new President. We just had a meeting to see if we have more volunteers for the Executive Board vacancies.

Want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. PFLAG of Greater Placer County will not be having a December meeting.
