Well another wonderful year has come to an end, and The Lavender Friends Club hopes you had a wonderful Holiday with family and friends. We had two functions in December and I want to thank Donna, Janine, Sharon and Maria for coordinating the Christmas Dinner Dance at Turkey Creek.   We had 92 members and guests enjoying themselves with good conversation, food, drinks and dancing.   Also, a big thanks to Jacquie and Nancy for hosting a Christmas brunch for 18 members at their home. They go all out with the Christmas decorations.

The only event schedule for January will be our General Business Meeting.  Once we coordinate the availability of the board members, we will advise the date of the meeting.

Since we are an LGBT organization, we will be working closer with the Placer County PFLAG organization to raise awareness in our schools and the general public that everyone is equal. If you want more information on our club, check our website: www.lavenderfriends.com.

Again, may 2012 be a prosperous and safe year..

Now that the holidays are behind us, it’s time to get members motivated to host Potlucks, Breakfasts, Coffee, Dinner/Lunches and any additional activities.   Our January General Business meeting was a success, as we received a lot of suggestions from the membership in attendance.   We are In the process of setting up guidelines for hosting potlucks.

This will be our 1st year to participate in the Annual Group/Club Expo on March 13th. We will be working with Placer County PFLAG in support of their Gay-Straight Alliance Scholarship Program.   The last two years, we have supplied Peace for Families in Auburn a Christmas dinner for two families. This agency offers Placer County victims of domestic abuse a safe house to escape their threatening home situation. Last year they had a surge of clients using the safe houses, increasing from 20 to 40 adults and 7 children.   We will now have a clothing drive in 2012 to help meet their needs. The attire must be suitable for their client’s court appearances and work setting.

Our Lavender Hearts committee checked with the Lincoln Volunteer Center and they have a program called “Seniors First”, an organization that coordinates volunteers to visit “shut-ins” or “frail seniors residing in Lincoln.   Several members visited two SCLH seniors enrolled in the program with a lengthy visit and also a basket containing snacks and small gift items.

Did winter pass us by? I guess we should be thankful, but we still need snow to avoid a drought. Hope you are enjoying this beautiful spring weather.

Want to thank Claudia for hosting the 3nd Game Night at her house. Those who attended had a great time playing Apples to Apples.   As usual the coffee get together at John’s house was a very fun event. Everyone brings a small side dish to share along with their latest adventure.   A couple of members are looking forward to the Annual Group/Club Expo. They have been busy making brochures/flyers.

We need members to volunteer to host the next potluck. If you want to volunteer, then contact Donna and let her know what month you will host.   So far, it looks like our March breakfast will be well attended.

Big thanks go to Gina and Terry who hosted the dinner out at the Olive Garden. The food was good and a good time was had by all. Special thanks go to Jacquie, Nancy, Herman, John, Phil and myself who were present to talk about our club at the Group Expo.    Besides hearing these comments by several patrons at the Group Expo “your club has the best candy” and “The flowers are a very nice touch”; most of all I want to thank the people who stopped by our table and gave us positive feedback about our club and what we are doing for the community.

Three of our members are working with PFLAG of Greater Placer County with their Gay/Straight Alliance Scholarship.   They will participate in the “GSA” Review and Selection Committee.

We are looking forward to the potluck at Phil and Richard as their guest speaker will be Jack Uppal the candidate running for United States Congress in California’s 4th District.

Want to thank Jack Uppal the candidate running for United States Congress in California’s 4th District for being our guest speaker at Phil & Rich’s potluck.   About twenty members learned more on his views and what actions he intends to implement if elected to Congress.   Of course everyone brought an appetizer to share and a good time was had by all.

Our coffee at Ron’s house was another great success with 22 members attending.   Everyone was surprised by the assortment of food (buffet style) that he provided.   This wasn’t our usual coffee event. Our May breakfast looks like another well attended event.

Don’t forget that the PFLAG of Greater Placer County holds its meetings on the second Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in Conference Room A at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital, 11815 Education Street, Auburn. Since the Group Expo in March, our club has been very productive.   A big thanks go to Gin and Marge for hosting two successful breakfasts this year with 28 members attending our last event.

Our Lavender Hearts committee and PFLAG presented three scholarships to Placer County graduating high school students. The Lavender Hearts committee also had a successful Café Italanio progressive dinner. Everyone enjoyed going to three different homes to feast and enjoy the different wines.

Looking forward to the “Opportunity to Make a Difference Potluck” in June to help support civic organizations/projects. The donated items for this event include: Golf Bag, Golf Travel Bag, Artwork, “B” St. Theater tickets, Jewelry, Potted indoor plant. There will also be 3 Holiday getaways. The first six months of this year have gone by quickly and our 62 members are looking forward to the holiday season. The Lavender Friends club includes straight, gay, lesbian and transgendered Sun City residents and our purposes include having various social functions and contributing to our community. The social consist of coffee, breakfasts, lunches, dinner at various restaurants or members’ homes, a Holiday Dinner Dance and varied other get-togethers. If you want more information about our club, check our website at www.lavenderfriends.com or contact Jackie Hilton or Herman Osorio.

Our Opportunity to Make A Difference Potluck in June was a great success. Our guest speakers were from PFLAG Of Greater Placer County, Inc. and Peace For Families, Inc., two non-profit organizations receiving the club’s support during the past six months. We contributed a cash donation for spring college scholarship awards and purchased holiday meals for victims of domestic violence residing at sponsored safe houses. The Potluck was organized by members of the Lavender Hearts Committee.

In June, several members of our club road on the PFLAG Of Placer County float in the San Francisco Gay Pride Parade, a fun time was had by all.

The Lavender Hearts Committee far exceeded their expectations on their successful fundraiser, raising a total of $1,580.00. They raffled 20 items that were generously donated by club members. The Labor Day weekend in San Francisco and two separate weeks over Christmas and New Years’ in South Lake Tahoe were silent auction activities and raised $750.00.  We want to thank the Lavender Friends Club member who gave the $500.00 check payable to PFLAG for the next round of GSA scholarships.

Morgan Lynn, Board Member of Peace for Families of Placer County has been invited to speak at our next potluck. We will be having a clothing drive for their Thrift Shop in Auburn. Now that fall is upon us, and we survived the summer heat, we are looking forward to cooler weather. I still say it’s too early to see Christmas items out on display at the stores. Let’s enjoy the fall season first.

Several members had a good time at our “Game Night Out” the other day. Again, our “Breakfast” at Awful Annie’s had a huge turnout and was a great success. Mark your calendar as our Octoberfest potluck on October 27 should be fun.

Our present Executive Committee terms expire in January so we are asking members to consider seeking to fill one of these four positions. Don’t forget our end- of-the-year Christmas Dinner/Dance event is almost upon us.

It has taken me almost a year to feature one of the most traveled members of our club. Now she travels aboard for a good cause and occasionally will take a side trip to relax. Dr. Sandra Hollingsworth, nicknamed “Sam” by her father Samuel when she was young, spends a lot of time in Yemen. No, she’s not fishing for salmon; she’s helping the government design an easy-to-learn instructional reading program for teachers who have little education themselves.

Sam, a K-12 teacher and professor of literacy at the University of California, Michigan State, and San José State University, has worked with governments in challenging places. She’s helped to reform reading and writing instruction in Haiti, Mali, Pakistan and other places, hoping to give youth a chance to choose an anti-terrorist career. Her latest challenge is Yemen. When she’s not traveling, Sam is planning her missions from her home in Lincoln Hills, where she lives with her beloved partner of 18 years, Robyn – who chooses not to go to Yemen.

We had a large turnout for our Oktoberfest Potluck with lots of German food. We are looking forward to our Breakfast at Awful Annie’s and “Game Night Out” at John’s house. Our present Executive Committee terms expire in January so we are asking members to consider seeking to fill one of these four positions. Don’t forget our end- of-the-year Christmas Dinner/Dance event is almost upon us.

The Lavender Friends Club held a Celebration of Life for Herman Osorio our Vice President who was taken from us suddenly in October. Lavender Friends members and PFLAG of Placer County Executive Board were in attendance. As our Vice President of Lavender Friends, he was also our parliamentarian, bringing his well-worn book of Roberts’ Rules of Order to our meetings, which he used to ensure we were using the correct procedures during our meetings. He was making a big impact with PFLAG and they wanted him to join their Executive Board. Herman really enjoyed serving on the PFLAG Scholarship Selection Committee. His many friends appreciated his wit, keen intelligence, and intense interest in progressive politics.

The Lavender Hearts Committee organized a clothing drive to benefit Piece For Families of Auburn. The clothing donations and pre-cooked Thanksgiving Dinners were greatly appreciated by this organization that provides a “Safe House” for domestic and sexual violence victims in need.

We are looking forward to another successful end-of-the-year Christmas Dinner/ Dance at Turkey Creek Golf Course. A big thanks goes to Donna and Janine who organized the event.
